Model release provides the photographer with permission to publish photographs. Releases are an industry standard for model related photo sessions and typically include use of images by the photographer for portfolio, studio samples and other commercial uses.
Why does PSNWA ask for Model Releases?
When photographed outside of a public area, individuals have rights to acknowledge the use of their likeness. There are a variety of laws that provide protection privacy to the individuals – on federal and state levels. The PSNWA Model Release is the acknowledgement by the person being photographed that the photographer has the right to use and display the images taken. Releases are not just a part of modeling, most photographers will require a release as part of a wedding photography contract, senior portraits or family portraits.
As a photographer will I need to ask for a release at a PSNWA event?
No, the PSNWA Model Release covers those photographers in attendance. Only models who have signed a PSNWA Model Release form will be allowed to attend any PSNWA event. For the privacy of the model, PSNWA holds the releases. Personal information, such as address, is not published or shared at events. Photographers in attendance are requested not to ask models for personal contact information or photographer specific releases.
What can I do with the images from PSNWA events?
The PSNWA Model Release provides photographers with the right to use the images for self promotion and as representations of their work, in addition the release gives the model, makeup artist, hair stylist, and wardrobe professionals, as well as location/business the right to also use the images shared by the photographer as representations of their work.
What should I do if someone wishes to buy an image featuring a model from a PSNWA shoot?
The PSNWA Model Release does not stipulate sale details to third parties. If you have a third party interested in purchase of an image from a PSNWA event please contact PSNWA, and a representative from the Board of Directors will contact the parties involved and place both parties (if mutually agreed upon) in contact for negotiation of additional contract and release to cover the sale of image(s) to the third party.
