Spend a weekend or a day with PSNWA, featuring a photography only tour of the Missouri State Penitentiary. “Pretty” Boy Floyd, Sonny Liston and James Earl Ray were all incarcerated here. One of the last remaining gas chambers in North America is here along with an underground dungeon, four floors of cell blocks, and tons of history. The penitentiary will be open only to PSNWA for 3 hours on Sunday morning from 8:00 to 11:00 AM on May 21st at a cost of $40 per PSNWA member and $45 per PSNWA guest.

Saturday Itinerary
Start your weekend by meeting us on Saturday May 21st at Red Oak II at 8:00 AM near Carthage MO and photograph one of the oddest of small towns – one man’s recreation of his 1930’s boyhood home. Featuring a Trolley Car diner, Railroad Station (to nowhere), a Blacksmith Shop, Feed Store, Phillips 66 gas station, and much much more. If you like back roads Americana or ever watched an TV episode of American Pickers, you’re gonna like Red Oak II.

Leaving Red Oak II about 10:00 am we’ll drive sections of Route 66 into Springfield for lunch, and then turn north to Ha Ha Tonka Castle, the ruins of a magnificent home built by grocery heir Robert McClure Snyder over a 10 year period beginning in 1904. We plan to arrive there about 3:00 pm, photograph for an hour and then drive on to Jefferson City, recently named by Rand McNally as the most beautiful small town in America.
Upon arrival we can check into our rooms, find a place for dinner, and choose a subject for night shooting. My favorite is the State Capitol building which is lit up like a national monument at night. Others may prefer the Jeff City Bridge which spans 640 feet through a continuous arch truss design.
Sunday Itinerary
Sunday morning join us at the Missouri State Penitentiary, 115 Lafayette St, Jefferson City by 7:45 am for group entrance to our PSNWA only tour. We will have the “big house” to our own for 3 hours, accompanied by a guide.
Our planned weekend is over after after the prison tour ends at 11:00 am, but consider some self-guided destinations such as seeing the Thomas Hart Benton Murals within the State Capital Building. Walk-in tours are available.

NOTE
1) Within the penitentiary there can be no wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches. Many people have gone on the tour using a cane without problem. Since the property was built in 1836, it is not ADA accessible.
