June 16, 2023 - June 17, 2023
9:45 pm - 12:30 am
Join us for an evening capturing nighttime photos of the Milky Way over the Kings River Falls.
Note: The hike to Kings River Falls is one mile from the trailhead (two miles roundtrip), there are a few obstacles requiring ability to climb and the trail covers uneven, rocky and at times slick or slippery ground. While the trail is mainly level and flat, please consider your ability to traverse the terrain in the dark.
Meet and carpool from East Springdale Walmart Neighborhood Market at 9:45 PM Friday evening
Sunset on Friday, June 16 2023 is at 8:15 PM. Milky Way should be visible in the southern sky in a dark area from 10:22 PM until 4:08 AM.
The core of the Milky Way should align over the falls at approximately 12:30 AM Saturday morning.
To facilitate travel, we will car pool from the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 9:45 PM. The Neighborhood market is on the corner of Hwy 412 (East Robinson Rd) and Butterfield Coach Road on the east side of Springdale. We typically meet in the NW corner of the parking lot. We should be back at the Neighborhood market by about 3 AM Sunday morning.
Essentials to bring:
- camera with plate to attach it to your tripod
- wide angle lens
- tripod
- headlamp or flashlight
- bug spray
- water for trip
Optional items that may be useful:
- remote camera release
- trekking poles for balance over uneven ground
- snacks
The ideal lens would be 14 to 16 mm, f2.8 to f4.0.
A camera body that has a manual mode so that you can adjust the shutter, ISO, and aperture independently would give you the best opportunity, but bring whatever you have available and we’ll make the best of an evening in the outdoors.
