  • Post-processing
     August 13, 2016
     9:00 am - 2:00 pm

The key to a great photograph is to take a great photograph, but sometimes, a little post-processing is necessary — or just fun. Post-processing could be as simple as correcting white balance or as complicated as applying a variety of filters to create a piece of artwork.

This workshop will teach you how to take your RAW files, correct them and produce the perfect photograph. We’ll start with a quick photo shoot downtown, then return to the studio for some one-on-one lessons with instructor Melissa Jones in converting and post-processing in Camera RAW and Adobe Photoshop. Camera RAW is also available in Lightroom, so Lightroom users will benefit from this class as well. We’ll start with the basics and move into the more creative effects. Those who have been hesitant to shoot in RAW will learn the benefits RAW holds over JPEG and how easy it can be to convert those RAW files into a beautiful photograph.

Participants should bring their cameras and, if possible, their computers with Photoshop or Lightroom loaded (if not, classmates can partner up on computers). A pair of walking shoes wouldn’t hurt, either.

Max class size: 25

Finding THE Picture with Bob Coleman

Remember the last time you came home from a shoot and couldn’t decide which pictures were your best? How can you possibly decide? There are sooo many you like. This class will look at the editing process through a photo editor’s eyes. Instructor Bob Coleman was chief Photographer/Photo Editor for the Texarkana Gazette and Chief Photographer /Assistant Photo editor for the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette/Northwest Edition. Bob will share the process he, and most photo editors, use to find the strongest pictures in a shoot. He will start by going through one of his recent shoots. Students, who are open to it, are encouraged to bring one of their recent shoots on a CF card or an SD card and let the class go through their shoot looking for THE image.

Materials:

Bring your own photographs to share on a computer, CF or SD card

  • Fireworks class
     June 30, 2016
     7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Ever wondered how to get those colorful streaks while photographing fireworks? What’s the best method? With July 4th approaching, this is the perfect time to learn how to take the perfect fireworks photo.

Taught by Melissa L. Jones, this class is a precursor to the fireworks photography event taking place at Arvest Ballpark the next night (Friday, July 1) after the Northwest Arkansas Naturals game. However, the class will also cover photographing fireworks in general, so event participation is not required. Learn the settings to get you started, what equipment is needed and the best way to post-process fireworks photos.

The class takes place at 7 p.m. June 30 at the PSNWA Gallery and Studios, 126 W. Emma Ave. in downtown Springdale.

Right Brain Photography with Eli Vega

Students will learn two of the three photography paradigms included in my book, plus the most essential piece in any art endeavor: Composition.

I.S.E.E. SOMETHING. From this paradigm/model, students will learn the photographic principles of Intuition, Scanning, Extracting, & Eliminating. Photographers are often frustrated and confused by all the clutter often seen in many scenarios. These simple steps will help clear the clutter in any given scene. Oftentimes, photographers feel overwhelmed when there is so much to take in. For photography purposes, the eyes see too much.

ELI’S 5-PT PHOTO ART MODEL. The five points covered to explain this paradigm are
Intuition, Imagination, Impressionism through photography, Surrealism through photography, and the application of Eastern philosophy to photography. Students will learn the difference between seeing with their eyes and seeing with their imagination; how to add the characteristics of Impressionism and Surrealism to their photography. They will also learn how to apply five key eastern philosophy concepts to their photography along with a focus on Composition and Format.

PREREQUISITES. The learning concepts are about thinking and seeing creatively. Students do need to know the basics of photography—f/stops, shutter speeds, light exposure metering.  No cameras needed

Students will learn to:
1) Use their intuition, even if they don’t think they have it.
2) See with their imagination
3) Scan the big picture
4) Extract from the big picture
5) Eliminate “dead” parts of any scene, and eliminate environmental noise.
6) Use their imagination to see something before they see it
7) Create Impressionism through photography
8) Create Surrealism through photography
9) Apply eastern philosophy to photography

Right Brain Photography Class with Eli Vega

Photographers are often frustrated and confused by all the clutter often seen in many scenarios. Oftentimes, photographers feel overwhelmed when there is so much to take in.  In this short course and slide show, Eli will show examples and explain how he creates his right brain photography. You will learn and see the four points he uses to describe his new book, RIGHT BRAIN PHOTOGRAPHY (Be an artist first).  Those four points are:
1) Be an artist first, using your cameras and features, (including lenses), as your paint brushes
2) See with your imagination, not your eyes
3) Learn to see something before you see it
4) Make the common uncommon and the mundane insane

As Eli says, “You will not see the world around you the same when you apply right brain photography principles”.

Consider learning more in depth with the upcoming Right Brain Photography workshop.
