  • Darkroom 101
     July 1, 2017
     10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Okay Darkroom Fans, dust off your negatives and grab your film camera as the PSNWA Community Darkroom is now open.

Constructed during the Winter of 2016-17; its entire build and equipment came through donations – it needs only you to enjoy service.

Tells us what instruction you would like, what your ambitions are – and we will craft the workshop to your needs.

  • Film development using Kodak’s D-76
  • Paper processing using Kodak’s Dektol
  • Darkroom procedure – including mixing chemicals

You need to supply or borrow a film camera and 35mm or 120 roll film (be sure your film is NOT C-41 development – often disguised as B&W chemically developed film). 8×10 B&W paper will be supplied for this class. You may also bring your own negatives to be processed.

Low-light (Night) and Moonlight Photography (Image Capture Focus) with Cleeo Wright

Taking shots of the night sky after sunset or during early sunrise can pose a challenge to any photographer but there are techniques that can make a difference. Cleo Wright, our guest instructor, will provide an overview of tools, creative options, and special considerations involved in shooting with a DSLR camera at night or in low-light conditions. We will cover exposure decisions such as choice of aperture/shutter speed and understand how they impact depth of field as well as the camera’s ability to freeze motion.

Topics include:

Understanding how low light affects exposure, shutter speed, color temperature
Preparing for a low-light shoot
Shooting in dimly lit rooms
Shooting in the shade
Focusing in low light
Light painting
Manipulating long shutter speeds
Correcting white balance
Brightening shadows
Sharpening and noise reduction

Bring your camera and flash for an opportunity to apply the techniques after class if time permits walking through downtown Bentonville.

3-Day Youth Photography Camp: June 27 through June 29 (Tues – Thur) at Hobbs State Park with Bob Coleman

This course is for the teen-aged youth, (ages 14-17), who is just beginning to develop his/her interests and experiences in digital photography. Together, we will hike and learn camera basics with many hands-on activities in a classroom environment.

Typically, the first day of camp includes getting to know one another and learning about the outdoors as well as the camera equipment.  We will spend most of our time learning camera basics and hear from our Hobbs State Park officials on areas of interest in and around the park. On the second day, we will look deeper into photocomposition and explore Hobbs State Park with a walk around the area focusing on the many flowers and insects so please wear comfortable shoes. On the third and final day, our Hobbs State Park tour guide will take us to a local trail to photograph water and other notable areas of interest. If time permits, we will discuss photo-processing and create a photo journal to showcase your best work.  Of course, all of this is weather dependent, so do your sunshine dance for three fun-filled days!

We will begin each day at 9 a.m. in the Hobbs Visitor Center. Please come in and sign your child in every morning, as well as sign out each day at 12 p.m.

How to Find Any Photo in 15 Seconds Using Lightroom with Jeremy TenHaken

If you use Photoshop CC, you are already paying for LightRoom CC. Why not put it to work?
LightRoom’s abilities to organize are (almost) infinite. 5 different star ratings x 5 color ratings x 3 flag status = 75 categories….and that’s just a bare beginning.

Learn how to prioritize which photos to work on and how to store outtakes where you could find them (if needed), without ever seeing or sorting through them again. Learn how to use collections to categorize by subject or date without the need for multiple copies or extra folders.

The class will be held at Whole Hog Cafe in Fiesta Square in Fayetteville.

As a child, Jeremy TenHaken found much solace in nature. The elegant and intricate designs in the plant and mineral worlds fascinated him. He was captivated by the ever-changing sky, the fanciful shapes of clouds, and the colors of sunrise and sunset. Growing up on the western shore of Lake Michigan, he marveled at the power of the storms, the serenity of an occasional unbroken calm surface and the rock beaches with rounded stones brought south by the last ice age.

In his career, Jeremy specialized in remediation of problem in people’s homes. Situations which could not be easily repaired required him to think outside the box, well before the phrase was coined.

After years of studying both digital photography and current post production techniques, he has been led to create bodies of work utilizing his keen sense of observation, informed by his unique view of his surroundings. He prefers to immerse himself in projects for long periods of time and compile a body of work which will guide the viewer into a new perspective of his subject.

Recent works include “Oversaturated in the Mid-Tones: a Glimpse of Cuba” and “Abandoned Art”, a study of automotive ornamentation abandoned outdoors and exposed to decades of neglect. He is currently working on “Tenacity: a Study of the Ancient Bristlecone Pines”, which will familiarize the viewer with these amazing 4,000-year-old trees. A new subject in mind, he is working to complete “Tenacity” before moving forward.

Recent venues for completed works include the PSNWA Gallery & Studio and the lobby of the Bank of Fayetteville.
