Eagles, Ducks, Pelicans and others
The Sequoyah (Sequoia) NWR is located just south of I-40 near Vian, Oklahoma, about 1 ½ hours from Fayetteville. The refuge is almost 21,000 acres of river bottom along the Arkansas River and is home to many species of birds, both migratory and year-round residents.
A big attraction is the active bald eagle nest that can easily be observed from the road by the main entrance. There are additional eagle nests scattered around the refuge. During the winter months flocks of migratory birds, including ducks, pelicans and others can be found in the numerous wetlands and grain fields. Wildlife including deer, coyote, otters, and armadillos can often be spotted as you travel the gravel roads that bisect the refuge.
Suggested gear: camera and long telephoto lens, tripod, appropriate gear for being out in the weather including boots, lunch and other snacks and drinks. Remember that if you pack it in, pack it out.
Carpool/Caravan: departs at 6:00 a.m. from the Fayetteville Sam’s Club or meet us at Sequoyah NWR AT 7:30 a.m.
Please register whether you plan to carpool or meet us at the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge.

Tour Leader: Tim Johnson
Tim Johnson lives in NW Arkansas and has been involved in photography for over 20 years. While spending a large amount of time photographing wildlife, especially birds, any type of nature photography will catch his interest. Tim has traveled across the country taking photos in many of the national parks, and last year had the opportunity to spend a week in the remote wilderness of the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in southeast Alaska. When not occupied taking photos, Tim also dabbles in restoration with native plants in the many gardens and native areas around his home.
